You Are Somebody’s December Plan

You Are Somebody’s December Plan

You have been thinking about your own December. The travel, the outfits, what you can manage, what you will skip.

Somewhere else, somebody has been thinking about theirs, and you are in it. An uncle. A cousin. A younger sibling finishing school. Somebody from home who heard you are doing well. They have not called yet, but the plan already has your name in it.

That is not a complaint about anybody. It is simply what it means to be the person in a family who earns.

The Most Predictable Thing About the Season

Here is the strange part. These requests arrive every single year, and almost nobody plans for them. We budget for flights and fabric and food, then treat the phone call like a surprise.

So it gets handled in the moment. You look at your balance, feel the weight of who is asking, and send something you had not accounted for. Then it happens again the following week with somebody else. None of the individual amounts are unreasonable. Added up with no plan behind them, they are the reason January hurts.

And the cost is not only money. Giving you did not plan for turns into quiet resentment, and resentment is a terrible thing to carry toward people you actually love.

Decide the Number Before the Calls Start

The difference between generosity and damage is almost always planning. If you decide in advance what you can give, the money leaves your hands as a decision rather than as pressure. You get to be the person who helps, and you still get to have rent in January.

It also makes your answer honest. "That is all I have set aside for this" is a true sentence when the money sits in a plan with a limit. It is much harder to say when the balance is sitting there in your spending account looking available.

How to Be Generous Without Wrecking Yourself

1. Name the people you already know will ask

You can predict most of them. Write the list. It is uncomfortable for about a minute and then it is just information.

2. Pick one total for all of it

Not an amount per person, one pot for the whole season. This is the number you can give without borrowing, and you decide it now while nobody is asking.

3. Keep it separate from everything else

Giving money and rent money cannot live in the same account. A Target Savings plan commits yours until a maturity date you choose and earns up to 15% a year while it waits, worked out for how long you actually hold the money rather than the full annual figure. Decide the full amount at the start, because a running plan cannot be topped up later.

4. When the pot is finished, it is finished

This is the only rule that matters. The limit you set in October is worth nothing if it moves every time somebody calls. Deciding once is kinder to everyone than deciding twelve times under pressure.

5. Never borrow to give

A loan taken to help somebody else is still your loan in February, with your name on it and your salary paying it. Helping from a plan is generosity. Helping from debt is just moving the problem onto yourself.

6. Share the load where you can

If you and your siblings are funding something together, a project at home, a parent’s celebration, medical costs, a Group Savings target lets everybody contribute toward one shared goal and see it filling, with people joining by link. It beats one person quietly carrying it and hoping the others remember.

Be in Your Own Plan Too

Being the person others count on is not a burden to resent. It is a position worth protecting, and the only way to keep doing it every year is to make sure it does not cost you the following month.

Decide your number, put it somewhere separate, and let the rest of your December belong to you.
