That Money in Your Account Is Not Savings

That Money in Your Account Is Not Savings

You have some money sitting in your account right now. Not spending money, the other one. The amount you quietly think of as what you are saving.

It is not savings. It is money you have not spent yet, and those are two very different things.

The Difference Is Whether It Has a Job

Savings has a purpose, an amount and a date. Rent in March. Fees in January. A laptop by the end of the quarter. You know what it is for and you know when it leaves.

Money resting in your account has none of that. It is simply available, which means it is available to everything. The friend who needs a favour. The sale you did not plan for. The Saturday that got expensive. It does not vanish because you are careless. It vanishes because nothing about it says no.

That is the whole difference. Savings is money that has been given a job and a deadline. Everything else is just money that has not met its spender yet.

And It Is Quietly Shrinking

There is a second problem with leaving it there. Headline inflation eased to 14.63% in September, and even at that gentler pace prices are still climbing. Money in an ordinary account earns nothing against that.

So the balance stays the same while what it can buy gets a little smaller every month. It is not dramatic and you will never get an alert about it. It is simply the slow cost of leaving money with no instructions.

How to Turn It Into Actual Savings

1. Give it a name

Not "savings". A real name. March rent. School fees. The move. A thing you can picture is much harder to spend on something else.

2. Give it a number

Work out what the goal actually costs today, not what it cost when you first thought about it. Vague amounts get abandoned first because you never know whether you are winning.

3. Give it a date

The date is what makes the whole thing real. It turns a wish into arithmetic, because now you can divide the amount by the weeks you have left and see exactly what it asks of you.

4. Move it somewhere that is not one tap away

This is the part that actually changes the outcome. A Target Savings plan commits your money until the maturity date you choose, and earns up to 15% a year while it waits. That rate is annual and worked out for how long you actually hold the money, so a short plan earns its share of it rather than the full figure. Decide the full amount at the start, because a running plan cannot be topped up later.

5. Keep a small part where you can reach it

A real emergency does not wait for a maturity date. Keep a little liquid for that, and let the rest be properly committed. The point is not to lock everything, it is to stop the planned money and the spendable money from living in the same place.

6. Use ajo when the goal is bigger than the time you have

If what you need is more than you can save before the deadline, a thrift circle hands you the full pot when your turn comes. No interest and no repayment chasing you afterwards.

What to Avoid

  • Calling an account balance your savings when it has no purpose attached
  • Keeping goal money in the same account you spend from
  • Setting a vague target with no date, which is the easiest kind to abandon
  • Planning to add to a plan later, since a running plan cannot be topped up
  • Leaving everything idle because it feels safer, when idle money quietly loses ground

Go and Look at It Now

Open your banking app and look at the number you have been calling your savings. Ask it three questions. What is it for, how much does that cost, and when do you need it.

If it cannot answer all three, it is not savings yet. It is just money waiting to be spent by somebody, and that somebody is usually you.
