How to Move Your Ajo Group From WhatsApp to an App

Your circle already works. People contribute, somebody collects, the turns go round. The problem is not the ajo, it is the admin.

One person is holding everybody’s money in their personal account. The record is a running note or a pinned message. Every month somebody has to go through the chat counting transfers, and at least once a cycle two people remember the same payment differently.

None of that is a reason to stop. It is a reason to move the circle somewhere the counting happens by itself.

What Actually Changes, and What Does Not

The group stays the group. Same people, same amount, same frequency, same order of turns. Nobody is being asked to start again.

What changes is where the money sits and who keeps the record. Contributions are held by the platform instead of by a member, every payment is logged against the person who made it, and everybody sees the same schedule. The person who has been doing the collecting stops being the one responsible for other people’s money.

Which, if you are that person, is the part worth selling to yourself first. You have been carrying a risk nobody thanks you for.

How to Move the Group

1. Raise it at the natural break, not mid-month

The easiest moment is between cycles, when nobody is owed anything and no turn is pending. If your circle is mid-cycle, finish it and move at the start of the next one. Moving halfway means carrying balances across, and that is where confusion gets in.

2. Lead with the admin, not the technology

Do not open with an app. Open with the thing everybody already finds annoying. No more counting transfers in the chat. No more one person keeping everybody’s money. People agree to solutions for problems they already have.

3. Write down the circle as it currently runs

The amount, the frequency, the number of members, the order of turns. Having it written in one place before you move is useful whether or not anyone switches, because most circles have never been documented anywhere.

4. Set it up as a private thrift

A private thrift is for people you choose yourself, which is exactly what your circle already is. You keep the same membership instead of being grouped with strangers.

5. Send the invite into the same chat

Everybody joins by link from the group you are already talking in. Expect the quiet ones to take a few days, which is normal and not resistance.

6. Let everyone complete verification

This is the step people skip and then wonder why the circle has not started. It takes a few minutes each, and it is what makes the group safe for the members who do not know each other well.

7. Turn the contributions automatic

Most circles do not fail because somebody refuses. They fail because somebody forgets on a busy week and then feels too awkward to be reminded. Automatic contributions take that whole dynamic out of the group.

What to Expect From the Group

Somebody will ask who is holding the money now. The answer is that no member is, which is the point. Somebody else will ask what happens if a person stops contributing, and that question deserves a straight answer rather than reassurance, so talk about it openly before you start.

And the person who used to collect may feel oddly displaced, because the role carried standing in the group. Worth naming. They are not losing trust, they are losing an unpaid job and a liability.

If Some People Will Not Move

Do not force it. Run the circle as it stands and start a second one in the app with whoever is willing, even if it is four people. Circles grow when members see one complete cleanly, and a finished cycle is far more persuasive than any explanation you can type into a group chat.

Same Circle, Less Carrying

Nothing about the way your group saves has to change. The contributions, the order, the people, all of it stays. The only thing you are putting down is the counting, the holding and the quiet arguments about who paid what.

Download the CircleFunds app, set up your circle as a private thrift, and send the invite into the chat you are already in.
